Historic Boone, NC: National Register of Historic Places

Located just miles away from Grandfather Mountain and off of the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway, the beautiful, historic town of Boone, NC is a must-see destination for families, friends, historians, and adventure seekers. Our Boone, NC cabin rentals are a popular destination, primarily because of their proximity and convenience to this quaint mountain town. Boone sits in Watauga County atop the beautiful Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina, and is home to thrilling adventures, charming local businesses, Appalachian State University, and historic places. The welcoming nature of this community and natural beauty makes Boone stand out as a must visit mountain destination. The National Register of Historic Places is the United States federal government's official list of districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects deemed worthy of preservation, and Boone and the surrounding areas are home to many registered historic places, including but certainly not limited to the ones listed below.

Henry Blair Farm

Located on Deerfield Road in Boone, the remaining 9 acre tract of this beautiful property is home to Boone's four oldest structures including The Blair House and three surviving farm buildings that were built in 1844 by Henry Blair and his wife Mary Steele. Henry Blair Farm was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in August, 2008, and then later became a certified organic farm in September, 2009.

US Post Office-Boone

This historic post office building located in Boone, built in 1938, was designed by the Office of the Supervising Architect under direction of Louis A. Simon, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. Its striking design consists of a steel framed stone building on a raised stone foundation in the Colonial Revival style.

The Moses H. Cone Memorial Park

This stunning country estate is located in nearby Blowing Rock, along Blue Ridge Parkway with access at milepost 294. The park is managed by the National Park Service, is open to the public and was included on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. While the main feature of the park seems to be the twenty-three room mansion known as Flat Top Manor, there are several other intriguing activities including  a craft shop and demonstration center, hiking and horseback trails, and fishing is also available at the two nearby fishing lakes.

Mast General Store

Recognized by the National Register of Historic Places on April 3, 1973 as one of the best remaining examples of an old country general store, The Original Mast General Store is still the center of the community of Valle Crucis housing the post office and is arguably most popular for its 5¢ cup of coffee.
